Summer Term topic: The Egyptians
What we want to learn:
- Who was Tutankhamen?
- Why were some Egyptians mummified?
- What were canopic jars used for?
- How were the pyramids built?
- How do we know so much about the Egyptians?
- What are hieroglyphs?
During the term we will be answering these these questions.
How can you help?
Ask your child what they have learnt so far in their topic, share your own knowledge or develop your own research project, which can be shared in class.
Egyptian Websites to help with homework
We have been very busy in class, have a look at what we have been up to so far.
In English this term we will be mastering Reading and Writing through the award winning book ‘Kaspar Prince of Cats’. As well as focusing on handwriting and presentation, we will be taking part in frequent creative writing opportunities to allow us to apply the skills we are learning in English lessons.
Last term we read ‘How to Train your Dragon’, as a class, we loved the book. We went to the cinema to see the latest release; we took part in a live skype in the classroom session with Cressida Cowell, the books author and created several extended writing pieces based on the text.
We are so passionate about our writing in Year 4 that we even wrote to the Woodland Trust to thank them for the trees they sent our school. We were so pleased when they replied!
Every morning in class we have a Math’s meeting, during the meeting we focus on calculations as well as recapping over that weeks Math’s learning. Please ensure children arrive promptly in school in the morning as we also often use the meetings for pre-learning opportunities. In Math’s lesson this terms we will be continuing with focusing on decimals, area and perimeter, solving measure and money problems, shape and symmetry as well as 3D shape.
A homework book for Year 4 children focusing on the skills of Math’s Mastery has been sent to parents. It features ideas on how you can support children at home, as well as advice on how we solve calculations and equations. If you require another copy of the book, or any other support with Maths please do not hesitate to speak to Mrs Goodhew.

Children in Year 4 should come to school dressed in the below P.E. kit on Mondays and Fridays.
Black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, black tracksuit top, red polo shirt and trainers.
Please note: Long hair must be tied back and all jewellery must be removed before the session.
Water Bottles: Children should have a water bottle in class with them everyday, particularly in hot weather. Please can we request that children bring reusable bottles, as a class we are very keen on limiting the amount of plastic we use.
Termly homework: your children will have been provided with termly homework which is to be completed weekly. Homework is to handed in on every Monday.
Reading: We expect your child to read at least three times per week and record the chapters/pages into their reading diaries. Reading diaries are to be in class everyday.
Spellings: Throughout school we deliver spellings through HeadStart Spelling. A guide for parents can be found below.
