Music

Intent

In our holy family, we all thrive socially, academically and spiritually to our fullest potential.

Competence in music is increasingly embedded in life, and is a key part of our spiritual, moral and personal development. Being able to confidently and creatively use a wide range of musical skills will enable pupils to access a wide range of experiences as well as being able to support them in their learning in other areas of the curriculum Therefore, we intend to provide the highest quality music education for all, creating confident, competent and enthusiastic learners of music so that they can thrive as they continue their development journey into successful adults.

Implementation

Every music session in school should start with a recap of the previous vocabulary that has previously been taught by using a simple PowerPoint consisting of musical vocabulary and definitions. These have been created specifically for each year group using the colour code red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

The children should also have the opportunity to learn and talk about the key composers from different centuries, genres and nationalities which are first introduced to them in their weekly singing assembly. 

In EYFS there are high quality opportunities available for all children to develop their musical skills in the different areas of Expressive Arts including role play, singing, small world etc. These should be ongoing throughout each day in the different areas of the classroom. The children have a weekly music lesson where they learn key vocabulary, key composers and they develop their musical skills. The children also have the opportunity to explore instruments, sing songs and nursery rhymes.  

In Key stage 1 and lower key stage 2 the children begin each music session by recapping the previous vocabulary and definitions taught in their weekly singing assemblies and these are then extended and developed in class following the music PowerPoints. The children will then take part in a weekly recorder session where they develop their musical knowledge, skills and they begin to read and play different notes in order to play simple songs. 

In upper Key stage 2 the children begin each music session by recapping the previous vocabulary and definitions taught in their weekly singing assemblies and these are then extended and developed in class following the music PowerPoints. The children then take part in a weekly music session led by a member of the National Schools Singing Programme. During these sessions the children develop their musical knowledge, skills and their composition skills.  

We offer children in Years 1 to 6 the opportunity to join our school choir where they perform as individuals, in small groups and as a whole choir to perform songs for school concerts, during our school Mass and when taking part in outside events such as Young Voices.  

 We also give the children the opportunity to take part in a musical show case at the end of the school year where they can perform to an audience. As a class they perform something they have learnt throughout the year for example, a song, a piece of music played by recorders etc.
