Intent
In our holy family, we all thrive socially, academically and spiritually to our fullest potential.
Appreciation of and competence in Art introduces pupils to creativity in a variety of disciplines and media. Children are able to experiment with and explore their own ideas, inspired by a wide range of artists, cultures, styles and subjects to work towards being able to express their ideas confidently to a high quality. These skills will help them to thrive and develop their talents, supporting future success as they continue their journey into becoming valuable members of our community.
Implementation
Art and Design skills and knowledge are taught across school from EYFS-Y6.
The National Curriculum objectives have been used to create a clear progression document for each year group that ensures progression in skills and knowledge and covers a breath of different media for the children to gain experience in.
Teachers are to plan and follow a sequence of lessons that build on specific art and design skills and knowledge over time. The skills and knowledge can be clearly identified by the learning intentions in the progression document.
There should be opportunity at the end of each sequence for children to apply the skills and knowledge to create a high quality final piece.
Each aspect of the sequence is marked using the Holy Family marking policy. Teachers assess pupils attainment and make a best fit judgement at the end of each term.
All lessons are to start with a memory meeting or a review of knowledge organisers. These are to remind children of their prior learning within the current project and also skills and knowledge from previous projects. New and previously learnt vocabulary must be shared at the start of each lesson with examples if needed. Learning intentions are to be shared and understood by all pupils.

All lessons are to includes high quality modelling of skills and frequent opportunities for pupils to practice and apply these skills, both supported and independently.
All work is to be recorded in sketch books in either photo form or the original piece, with the learning intention clearly labelled.
All lessons should end by reviewing new knowledge, the skills taught and the learning intention.
Wherever purposeful, the artist, subject or style makes links with other areas of the curriculum and art is used in other subjects where this will enhance learning.
