Writing

At Holy Family we believe all pupils should be able to develop the skills to confidently communicate their ideas, knowledge and thoughts through their writing. Our curriculum aims to develop children’s wider vocabulary and to effectively apply spelling patterns and rules they learn throughout their time in school. Our engaging class based texts provide children with a range of writing opportunities based on developing the key skills of grammar and punctuation as well as providing children with the opportunities for writing for different purposes, contexts and audiences.

Impact

By teaching English through high quality age-appropriate texts children develop the skills needed to be confident writers with an understanding of punctuation and grammar. Children develop a wide range of vocabulary through their reading in class and through our links to the wider curriculum including Science, History and Outdoor Education.

We assess pupils by providing them with creative independent writing opportunities where they are able to apply the skills taught in class. The development of children’s writing and these key skills of punctuation and grammar can be seen clearly within English books. Teacher assessments are collated termly and are evaluated by the English Lead.
