Music

At Holy Family Catholic Primary School, we believe that music can enhance children’s knowledge, learning, well being and confidence. Children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres. I have recently started a choir where children are encouraged to sing and develop their musical skills. The children have recently sang at Young Voices at Sheffield Arena where they confidently sang several songs they have been learning.

At Holy Family, we believe that a clear and effective scheme of work that provides coverage in line with the National Curriculum is essential to meet the requirements of our children in order for them to thrive. Music is taught throughout school using the award winning Music Express Scheme devised by Collins. Our music curriculum ensures children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is embedded in the classroom activities as well as in assemblies, various concerts and performances and the learning of instruments.

We value the role that music has in achieving outstanding outcomes for all children. We believe that children should have a broad and balanced curriculum to support their learning in English and Maths which is why we develop learning in music through the Music Express Scheme of Work.

Here is a copy of our long term plan using this scheme of work for each year group.

Long Term Plan music

Every year group has now got a music display in the classroom showing the relevant vocabulary for each topic. These displays are changed regularly in order to help the children to learn and develop their understand of the correct language. Each year group has also created a music book where they put pictures and videos of music lessons showing clear intentions, progression and enjoyment.

Here are the key vocabulary that each year group will be learning and using throughout each topic taught in Music:

Year 1 key Vocabulary for each Music Topic

Year 2 key Vocabulary for each Music Topic

Year 3 key Vocabulary for each Music Topic

Year 4 key Vocabulary for each Music Topic

Year 5 key Vocabulary for each Music Topic

Year 6 key Vocabulary for each Music Topic

We have recently taken part in ‘Young voices’ at Sheffield Arena where the children confidently sang the different songs they had been practicing for several months. The children did the school proud and we are looking forward to performing to their parents later in the year.
